The Gran CanariaInternational Festival of Arts and Digital Cultures, CANARIASMEDIAFEST, has beaten its own participation record. This year´s event has received a total of 545 entries coming from 44 different countries.Germany, with 52 works, followed by the United Kingdom, with 38; U.S.A. with 37; France with 27; Austria and Brazil, with 25 and 24 entries to the competition respectively, constitute those countries with the greatest participation.South Korea, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia represent some of the most far-flung countries that have submitted entries, which reflects the strong international character of the competition.
Of the entries submitted to the competition, the number of works coming from abroad surpasses the number of Spanish entries: 321 international works compared to 224 national entries. The Canary Islands (with 69 entries), Madrid (48) and Catalonia (42) are the Autonomous Communities whose participation has been the greatest. These works, however, will have to get through a pre-selection stage, meaning that only some of them will be chosen to take part in the competition proper.
El Centro Cultural Gran Canaria Espacio Digital de Las Palmas will stage this competition, helped by the Consejería de Cultura y Patrimonio Histórico del Cabildo de Gran Canaria (Department of Culture of the Gran Canaria Government).Every two years the festival offers a leading selection of international art and new technology.Since 1989, the city of Las Palmas, Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands has offered a unique opportunity for aficionados of new media used in the arts.CANARIASMEDIAFEST offers exhibitions, samples, lectures (symposium), workshops, open-air multimedia concerts, performances and competition in nine categories. The next Festival will take place between 31 October and 4 November 2006.
